
AUTOSAR DEXT
Diagnostic Development with AUTOSAR
The AUTOSAR Diagnostic EXTract (DEXT format) is a supplement to the AUTOSAR System Description and offers a solution for configuring AUTOSAR-compliant diagnostic Basic Software.
Motivation
OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers design the development process for vehicle diagnostics in a wide variety of different ways. Different exchange formats are used and the tools used usually only support their own process. Problems usually arise when diagnostic descriptions are to be exchanged with development partners and reused in their tool chain. The consequences are increased coordination effort, data loss and, in the worst case, errors in the Basic Software.
The DEXT format as an exchange format offers simplified options for AUTOSAR-based diagnostic development and consistent data exchange between development partners.
Advantages
- The DEXT format fulfills all the requirements of the diagnostic Basic Software configuration.
- The DEXT format is used as a description format for diagnostics in both AUTOSAR platforms AUTOSAR Classic and AUTOSAR Adaptive
- The diagnostics-relevant part of the basic software can be exchanged uniformly across company boundaries, for example OEM and Tier 1 or in OEM cooperations.
- The DEXT format covers the content of the Basic Software Modules supported in AUTOSAR for diagnostics. The mapping not only describes the respective protocol, but also the reference to the source of the data.
- The DEXT format can be used to exchange both UDS-based and SOVD (Service-oriented Vehicle Diagnostics)-based diagnostics.
- Generating ODX and DEXT data from a common source ensures that the diagnostic software in the ECU and the diagnostic tester are compatible.

AUTOSAR DEXT has been specially designed to meet the requirements regarding data entry in the Basic Software.
The main elements are
- Selection of diagnostic services and associated subservices for UDS, OBD Legislations, J1939 and SOVD.
- Description of the data communicated via the diagnostic interface with data types and conversion information.
- Fault memory
- Diagnostic data elements
- Mapping of the diagnostic data elements to the application software
Tool Chain

Vector's tool chain provides a consistent diagnostic data exchange between OEM and Tier 1 suppliers based on an AUTOSAR-based diagnostic development process while ensuring the synchronization of ODX and DEXT data.
- CANdelaStudio as a diagnostic design and specification tool exports the DEXT format, including the diagnostic mapping (if the CANdelaStudio document was created by PVCDI or SWC Sync) and the corresponding ODX format.
- DaVinci Configurator Classic reads the DEXT format and derives the configuration of the AUTOSAR-compliant diagnostic Basic Software (BSW) Modules (DCM, DEM) from it. DaVinci Configurator Classic then generates the SWC interface of the diagnostic BSW Modules and connects them to the ports of the application SWCs - matching the diagnostic mappings in the AUTOSAR DEXT.
