Railway Systems Engineering

Accelerated Development and Efficient Testing

Railway software, devices, and systems connect people. They need to function with maximum reliability, both in the vehicle and on the tracks. Standards like CENELEC EN 50716 (which replaces EN 50128 and EN 50657), the seamless integration of digital solutions into existing systems, as well as the necessity for effective collaboration among network operators, regulatory authorities, and manufacturers are just a few challenges in software development for railway applications.

I/O Hardware for Testing Embedded Systems

Tests of embedded systems often require complex and expensive test solutions, which is why they are only used in the later phases of the development process. With the VIO System, I/O testing can be performed much earlier. Its compact design makes it ideal for use on the laboratory bench, enabling continuous testing and simulation at evaluation board level even in the earliest stages of development. Whether sensors, actuators or complete ECUs need to be tested during the HW/SW development phase, the VIO System covers all possibilities.

Scalable and Modular Systems for Efficient HIL Testing

To test devices thoroughly, it is not only necessary to connect the communication networks to the test system, it is also necessary to connect the I/O interfaces. This task is handled by the Vector VT System. It simplifies the setup of test benches and HIL test systems immensely, because it integrates all circuit components needed to connect an I/O channel in one module.

VectorCAST and Embedded Railroad Applications

Dynamic software testing is an essential part of ensuring the functional safety of software in railroad applications and is required by the CENELEC standard EN 50716 (which replaces EN 50128 and EN 50657). VectorCAST is the solution for testing embedded applications in the railroad industry and supports the capture and reporting of structural code coverage at all levels required by EN 50716. Vector offers a standardized tool qualification package that proves the accuracy of VectorCAST output in embedded development environments.

Set up CANoe for Software-in-the-Loop Tests

The communication between CANoe and the software under test (SUT) during software testing is realized through the SIL Adapter. This SIL Adapter consists of auto-generated source files and libraries based on a description of the sensor, actuator, network and/or software interfaces of the SUT. Both Python and C/C++ SIL Adapters can be generated for this purpose. These software components can then be added to the SUT project for instrumentation. The SIL Adapter uses the SIL Kit, an open-source software library by Vector, as middleware for data transport from and to CANoe.
