MICROSAR HSM

Bring proven HSM firmware to your ECUs. MICROSAR HSM delivers cryptographic services, secure key storage, and supports secure boot.

MICROSAR HSM is Vector's firmware for Hardware Security Modules (HSM) integrated in microcontrollers with a secure core. It runs cryptographic services on the HSM, manages keys in protected memory, and verifies your ECU at boot, without loading the host processor.

You use MICROSAR HSM in automotive ECUs that handle secure boot, secure onboard communication, secure software updates or TLS-protected off-board communication. The firmware runs on HSMs from a range of semiconductor manufacturers and integrates seamlessly with Vector’s MICROSAR Classic, and the MICROSAR Bootloader. You configure it with the same tool you use for the rest of your stack: DaVinci Configurator Classic.

Key Benefits at a Glance

  • Cryptography up to 100x faster than software
Hardware-accelerated calculation on the HSM offloads the host CPU and removes cryptography as a runtime bottleneck.
  • Modular firmware with full source code access
Adapt memory footprint and runtime to your project, debug at source level, and implement OEM-specific requirements without proprietary detours.
  • Certified and ready for what comes next
    ISO/SAE 21434 certified. Post-Quantum Cryptography compatible. Aligned with UN R155 / CSMS.

Key Features of MICROSAR HSM

What does it take to protect a modern ECU? Six feature areas, all running on the HSM, all connected to your basic software stack and application.

Certified According to ISO/SAE 21434

MICROSAR HSM has been officially certified according to ISO/SAE 21434. With this certification, Vector underscores its commitment to offering cybersecurity solutions that meet the highest international standards.

Inside MICROSAR HSM

A modular architecture turns your HSM into a standard basic software building block. Five components, one clean path from host request to executed cryptographic operation.

microsar-hsm-crypto-hsm driver-host-side.png

Crypto(veHsm) driver (host side)

The standardized Crypto driver on the host CPU. Your applications call it without needing HSM-specific knowledge.

You write against a stable API. If the underlying HSM changes later, your application code stays untouched.

Inter-Processor Communication

An optimized shared-memory channel between host and HSM.

It keeps latency low when the host hands off cryptographic work to the secure core.

HSM Job Processor

The central component inside the HSM that receives pending tasks and dispatches them to the right driver.

One place coordinates cryptography, key management, and secure boot. No fragmented control flow.

CRYIF and Drivers

The intermediate layer that routes jobs to the software-library driver, the hardware-accelerator driver, the secure boot driver, or your custom crypto driver.

You mix software and hardware cryptography in the same firmware, and add OEM- or project-specific algorithms through a defined extension point.

Secure Memory

Protected memory inside the HSM. It holds keys, certificates, mileage, and other sensitive content.

Keys are securely generated and managed within certified HSMs, ensuring they remain protected at every stage.
