The Challenge
Increased efficiency when flashing multiple ECUs on-site.
Previous portable flash solutions require large, bulky and not very robust devices that have to be used with an external PC. Time-consuming preparations make the process inflexible and inefficient. Nevertheless, there is always a need to perform urgent software updates on a large number of ECUs, preferably in parallel and on-site. These update campaigns are often unplanned but must be able to be started and completed in the shortest possible time – time and cost efficiency are key success factors in addition to maximum reliability. Furthermore, the environment requires an extremely robust solution that operates independently of external PCs and provides both communication interfaces and power supply on its own.
In addition, external computers such as laptops or PCs are usually not permitted at OEM locations. This makes the use of a compact and mobile standalone flash station essential. It must be quick and easy to set up and extremely simple to use, enabling technicians to perform updates quickly and error-free directly on-site.
The Solution

Flash Station: Efficiency in a handy suitcase format.
To minimize setup effort and avoid time-consuming configurations, a mobile Flash Station was developed that is consistently designed for simplicity, flexibility, and speed. The solution includes the Vector software “vFlash Station” and "CANoe Standalone Basic", including configuration. Both applications are installed on a Vector VN8900 device, which is fully integrated into a robust, waterproof, and flight-safe case. With the “vFlash Station” software, up to 10 ECUs can be updated in parallel, each on a separate network or channel.
The Portable Flash Station case is universally applicable and equipped with an integrated power supply unit. vFlash projects can be easily exchanged to serve different ECUs or OEM requirements – at no additional cost. The case allows up to eight ECUs to be programmed in parallel and supplies them with power at the same time. The flash process can be controlled individually via the integrated touch display or started synchronously using the flash button. Using vFlash Reporting, information about the flash activities can be stored internally for documentation as well as quality assurance purposes, customized individually, and analyzed later.
However, the benefits of this project-based and therefore customizable solution go beyond pure ECU flashing. The Portable Flash Station case supports a wide range of application scenarios that require mobile and dynamic communication configuration. This makes it a powerful tool (case) for efficient use in the field.
