Power Management Software for Charging Sites and Depots

Smart Power Distribution is hardware-agnostic power management software for charging sites and depot charging systems that need to distribute available power across multiple charging points without being tied to proprietary power electronics hardware. Running on vSECC, vSECC.MCS or any capable computer, it assigns available power electronics capacity to active EV charging sessions on demand, rather than dedicating a fixed module to each charging point. Power is redistributed in real time as vehicles connect, charge and disconnect, enabling more efficient use of existing site capacity.

Fixed Allocation of Power Electronics Leaves Capacity on the Table

In conventional DC charging architecture, each charging point has its own dedicated PE unit, permanently assigned to that position regardless of whether anyone is charging there.

Idle Power Electronics at Every Unoccupied Bay

A twelve-bay site requires twelve PE units. If only three vehicles are charging, nine units sit idle. Capital cost scales with positions, not demand.

Hardware Cost Scales Linearly with Charging Positions

Adding bays means adding PE units one-to-one, regardless of actual concurrent load. Infrastructure cost scales with positions, not utilization.

No Flexibility for Mixed-Standard Architectures

In a fixed-assignment model, CCS and MCS positions each need dedicated PE hardware. A module assigned to a CCS bay cannot serve an MCS vehicle, even when that bay is empty.

How Smart Power Distribution Works

Smart Power Distribution controls a matrix switch that connects a shared pool of PE modules to all charging points. vSECC assigns modules to active sessions on demand and returns them to the pool when the session ends.

Step 1: EV Connects and Requests Power

A vehicle plugs in. vSECC opens a communication session over ISO 15118 or DIN SPEC 70121 and determines the vehicle's power demand.

Step 2: Smart Power Distribution Selects and Assigns PE Modules

Smart Power Distribution selects PE modules from the shared pool and closes the matrix switch to connect them to the active charging point. The assignment is purely in software.

Step 3: Modules Return to Pool When the Session Ends

When the session ends, vSECC opens the switch path and releases the modules back into the pool, immediately available for any other charging point.

Deployment Use Cases

Smart Power Distribution is relevant wherever shared power electronics serve multiple charging points and simultaneous occupancy is predictably lower than total capacity.

Fleet Depot

Overnight depot charging for commercial fleets: A depot with predictable charging patterns (vehicles arriving in the evening and departing in the morning) rarely has every bay occupied simultaneously throughout the full charging window. Smart Power Distribution allows the site to cover more parking positions with fewer PE modules, matching the actual concurrent load profile rather than peak theoretical capacity.

Public HPC

High-power charging with variable occupancy: Public HPC sites experience variable occupancy throughout the day. Smart Power Distribution ensures that whichever bays are active receive full available power from the shared pool, rather than being limited by fixed per-bay allocations. Up to 30% higher utilization of installed PE capacity compared to fixed-assignment architectures.

Multi-Standard

Combined CCS and MCS charging parks: A shared PE pool can serve both CCS and MCS charging points through the same matrix switch. When no MCS vehicle is present, those PE modules are available for CCS sessions, and vice versa. A single pool of hardware covers both standards without permanently dividing capacity by connector type.
